Microwave Turntable Not Working? A Few Reasons Why It Is Happening

The turntable is not just the surface your food rests on inside the microwave; it is also the surface responsible for ensuring your food is evenly heated. Consequently, when the turntable is not working correctly, using your microwave will not be a pleasant experience. Learn about some of the underlying problems that can cause this issue so that you know how to address repairs.

Coupler Issue

One of the first places to look when you face this issue is the coupler. If you lift the turntable tray, you should see a triangular or circular object sitting at the bottom of the microwave, in the middle of the area is where the tray normally rests.

This device is known as the coupler, and it is largely responsible for moving the tray. A coupler can stop working for several reasons, but most often this is due to wear and tear. A professional can generally remove the damaged coupler and replace it with a new one to resolve the problem.

Motor Failure

On the underside of the coupler is a motor unit. The motor unit is the device that helps power the coupler so that it will rotate and ultimately, allow the turntable to move. Similar to the coupler, the motor in an older, or frequently used, microwave can fail due to wear and tear.

However, the motor can also fail due to a wiring issue. If the turntable intermittently turns or you see sparks, this issue could be to blame. In either case, for safety reasons, you should stop using the microwave until you have a repair professional look at it.

Dirt Buildup

Fortunately, just because the turntable will not move, it does not mean that there is a major issue with the appliance. Sometimes, the problem can be rectified with a little cleanup. The coupler and the wheeled track-like device that the turntable rests on must be able to move without obstructions.

Grease, grime, and particles from food create obstructions around these areas which can prevent these systems from moving. Look around the coupler and the track to make sure the area does not have buildup, and if it does, clean the area to see if it corrects the problem.

Although it is small, it is important to keep in mind that a microwave is an electronic device, so safety is very important. Whether you have an idea of what the problem might be or not, your best bet is to contact a microwave repair professional for services.
